Just like you teeth, your spine can decay. This is referred to as spinal degeneration.
As proper spinal curves change due to trauma, prolonged improper posture (at work or even while you sleep), or because of neglect you spine will adapt by degenerating…regardless of your age. It is how your body deals with the stress of gravity if left untreated. The sooner the problem is treated the better the results.
Spinal degeneration is generally classified into a three-phase process although it is a continuum.
Three Phase Process
The three-phase model based on the book Managing Low Back Pain, by W. H. Kirkaldly-Willis and Thomas Bernard, Jr. will take years to develop, however, symptoms may not always obviously present, until the one day when you do something innocuous like turn your head, (or pick a pencil off the floor). OUCH…but the process started much before then.
Notice how the curve is intact and the spaces between the bones (vertebrae) are well maintained. Also notice how the corners of the vertebrae are well rounded (no pointy ends) |

| Phase III Spinal Degeneration Here the spaces between the bones are completely obliterated, the bones have fused and there is no movement occurring at this level. |

If you are in one of the first two phases of degeneration regular chiropractic care may prevent, delay the progression or in some cases even reverse the degenerative phase you are in. However, if you are in phase three… there isn’t much we can do but turn our attention to the areas that have not progressed so rapidly and prevent them from doing so. Every patient has a unique set of circumstances that result in their injuries and will each have individual results from any treatment.
